May 5, 2025 - The Supreme Court will today, May 5, hear a number of pleas challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025. The hearing will begin at 2:00 pm by a three-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice Sanjiv Khanna. The other two judges on the Bench are Justice Sanjay Kumar and Justice KV Vishwanathan.

The last hearing concluded on April 17 with the Centre assuring India’s top Court that it would hold back on two key and contentious aspects of the Bill - identification of Waqf properties, including “waqf by user”, and not make any new appointments to the Central Waqf Council and Boards until the May 5 hearing.

The government is represented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta who had filed more than 1,300-page affidavit in an interim response to the petitions. The Court will have limited time to hear the pleas and the lawyers with CJI Khanna due to retire on May 13. It will hear five lead petitions of the 150 filed including one filed by AIMIM (All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen) chief Asaduddin Owaisi.
