Slum dwellers of nearly half a dozen shanty towns around the city demanded possessions of plot (patta) in an impartial way after being perceived by the administration that their houses are constructed on Forest Department’s property.
Hundreds of people gathered outside the Collectorate and demanded justice. The residents handed over an application letter to District Collector and expressed their concern.
According to the letter, there are 50 slum areas in Udaipur, existing since 1977. Amongst all, Kailash Colony, Swaraj Nagar, Deewan Shah Colony, Raza Nagar and Zarina Kachchi Basti are the oldest with more than 1500 families residing in these areas.
The letter also stated that UIT has distributed 400 plots in a land adjacent to the slum where a residential colony is now flourishing, then why local administration doesn’t sanction plots to the slum area from last 20 years.
According to the Committee, formed in order to raise their voices to higher authority, “There are people from all caste and religion residing in these areas. Most of the families are not financially sound and do petty jobs and labour work”.
The Committee appealed to the Government and Administration to look into the matter, else there will be larger protests.
Heavy police force was deployed outside the Collectorate to maintain law and order situation.
