IITs Ban 20 Firms from Placement Drive for Revoking Job Offers

IITs' ban on 20 companies comes for cancelling job offers last minute, impacting student careers and welfare

 |

Dec 3, 2025 - The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) has collectively with all its institutes taken a strict step at the very start of the placement season by completely barring more than 20 companies from campus placements. This ban has been imposed on companies that cancelled the offer letters of IIT students last year just before the joining date, causing the students stress and uncertainty. Most of the blacklisted companies are from data analytics, software development and tech services.

The placement system in IITs is highly structured. Once a student receives an offer, they cannot participate in any further interviews. Because of this, when an offer is suddenly cancelled, students are left with neither the chance to appear for new interviews nor enough time to find an alternative job. After several institutes reported similar cases, the IITs decided to blacklist these companies for one year.

These companies are, however, allowed to offer jobs to students through off-campus process.

IITs say this step has been taken keeping in mind students’ career concerns and mental well-being. Many of the blacklisted companies were accused not only of withdrawing offers but also, in some cases, reducing salary packages even after issuing offer letters.

Placement coordinators of 15 IITs reviewed past records of these firms and found that some had a repeated history of cancelling offers. Around 6 to 7 IITs had already banned them earlier.
