Sept 9, 2025 - In a major breakthrough in medical science, Russia has announced that its scientists have developed a new vaccine for the treatment of colon (large intestine) cancer, which has shown complete success in pre-clinical trials. According to Veronika Skvortsova, head of Russia's Federal Medical and Biological Agency (FMBA), the vaccine is now ready for use and is awaiting regulatory approval by Russia's Ministry of Health. The vaccine will be initially used for the treatment of colorectal cancer.

This announcement was made at the 2025 St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

Skvortsova said the vaccine, Enteromix, has been under development for several years, with the last three years dedicated entirely to essential pre-clinical studies. The trials were carried out by Russia's National Medical Research Radiological Centre in collaboration with the Engelhardt Institute of Molecular Biology and involved 48 volunteers. These studies have proven that the vaccine is completely safe, even when administered multiple times.

Moreover, Enteromix has shown 100% efficacy and safety. In the trials, tumour size was reduced by 60% to 80%, and the progression of cancer slowed significantly. Additionally, there are no serious side effects and an improvement in patient life expectancy was observed.

The vaccine has been developed using the same mRNA technology as the Covid-19 vaccines and helps the body's immune system identify and destroy cancer cells. This is a safer alternative to treatments like chemotherapy.

Since Enteromix is created based on the identification of specific proteins, it will be customised for each patient, making it different from conventional medicines. The cost of a single dose of the vaccine is estimated to be around Rs 2.5 lakh (INR). Russian citizens will be provided the vaccine free of cost.
