July 31, 2025 - On Wednesday July 30, the Delhi High Court asked the Central Government whether it has the authority to order six cuts in the film Udaipur Files: Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder. The Court said the government must exercise its powers strictly within the limits of the Cinematograph Act.

“You have to exercise the powers within the four corners of the statute. You can’t go beyond that,” the Court observed.

A Bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela was informed that the Centre had ordered the film to be re-certified with six cuts and the addition of a disclaimer. Based on this, the film has been re-certified, but the certificate has not yet been issued to the producers owing to the matter still being under judicial consideration.

The hearing on the petitions filed seeking a ban on the film’s release remained inconclusive. The Court said it would continue the proceedings on August 1.
