Sneak Peek at the 'Architects Tower' Being Designed in Udaipur: Dedicated to Mandan, the Renowned Chief Architect for the Mewar Kingdom.
Udaipur, July 6, 2026 | Udaipur Local News: A unique initiative, dedicated to architects, is beginning to take shape at Udaipur. The 'Architects Tower' a 35ft tall monument is being dedicated to architects, the artisans who have been giving shape to the dreams of rulers and planning their beautiful palaces, forts, monuments and cities for time immemorial. Ironically, the creative minds of history, who have given cities, countries and the world its identity are not celebrated anywhere be means of a public monument. This aspect is now being addressed in Udaipur, the City of Lakes, the the form of the 'Architects Tower'.
The 35ft tower, dedicated to the chief architect of the Mewar kingdom, Mandan, who also designed the world famous historic Kumbhalgarh Fort, will be a symbol of society's collective gratitude to the creators, artisans and craftsmen of India. The monument will serve as a medium to accord public recognition to the entire community of artisans and architects. Work on the tower will begin on July 7 and will soon be dedicated to the public, according to Architect Sunil Laddha, who is also the project director.

Conceptualisation of the Project - Ar Sunil Laddha
This ambitious project has been conceptualized by Sunil Laddha, a renowned architect from Udaipur. He observes that while countless monuments worldwide commemorate kings, warriors, and historical events, there are few public memorials honoring the architects who envisioned these civilizations and structures. This realization gave birth to the idea of the "Architects' Tower."
'A city's true identity is shaped by its architects, designers and creative minds. A city is a confluence of Science, Culture and modern Architecture', says Sunil Laddha.
Eternal Bond Between Nature, Time, and Science
Priyanka Kothari, a young architect and technical collaborator on the project, stated that the tower's most distinctive feature will be a vertical sundial. It will vividly present the eternal bond between nature, time, and science to the public. This unique blend of Indian knowledge traditions and modern architecture will transform it into not just a visual spectacle, but also an educational landmark.
The 'Sutradhar' Tradition: Originating with Lord Vishwakarma
Lord Vishwakarma is revered as the primal Sutradhar (master architect/craftsman) of the cosmos, as per Indian tradition. Artisans who mastered the principles of construction were thus known as Sutradhars—a term that evolved over time into words like Suthar and Sutar. In the inscriptions, eulogies, and historical texts of Mewar, the title of Sutradhar has long stood as a symbol of honor and pride.

Mandan, the Great Master Architect of Mewar
In the 15th century, Mandan—serving as the chief architect and master builder for Maharana Kumbha—elevated Indian architecture to new heights. Under his guidance, the world-renowned Kumbhalgarh Fort was constructed; its fortification wall, stretching approximately 36 kilometers, ranks among the longest in the world. His contributions are also evident in the design of Katargarh (located within Kumbhalgarh) and numerous palaces, temples, and architectural structures within the Chittorgarh Fort.
Mandan was not merely a skilled craftsman but also a profound authority on Vastushastra (Indian architectural science). By authoring timeless treatises such as Prasad-Mandan, Rajvallabh, Rup-Mandan, and Vastu-Mandan, he systematized the principles of urban planning, building design, sculpture, and architecture. These texts remain vital references for architectural studies in India and abroad. The tower currently being built in memory of this great master architect will serve as a living tribute to the tradition of Indian architecture.

Poised to Become Udaipur’s New Identity
This tower will bestow a fresh, contemporary identity upon Udaipur—the City of Lakes and Palaces. With its distinctive architectural design by day and captivating lighting by night, it is set to become a major attraction for tourists, architects, engineers, students, researchers, and developers alike. In the future, it could emerge as a significant landmark for architectural tourism in India.
Timeless Tribute to Creativity
The 'Architects Tower' will be more than just a structure of concrete and steel; it will serve as society's public tribute to the artisans, master builders, and architects who have shaped civilizations through their creativity and vision. This monument will carry forward the creative legacy—spanning from Lord Vishwakarma and the legendary master builder Mandan to the architects of the modern era—to future generations.

Udaipur’s initiative goes beyond merely enhancing the city's aesthetic appeal; it conveys the message that civilizations are not built by power alone—it is creative minds and visionary architects who immortalize them. It is this very message that holds the potential to earn the "Architects Tower" a unique identity not only within India but across the global architectural landscape.
