March 1, 2026 - Iran’s Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been killed in the US-Israel airstrikes. This information was confirmed by the state-run agency IRNA which also reported that along with Khamenei, his daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law and grandchild were also killed in the airstrikes on Saturday (February 28) in his office compound.

The statement came hours US President Donald Trump announced Khamenei’s killing, saying he has a “good idea” of who he wants to replace the supreme leader with.

Mourning of 40 days and seven day public holiday have been announced after the Supreme Leader confirmed dead.

Also killed in the airstrikes are Iran’s Defence Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh, Ali Shamkhani, a senior political adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and secretary of Iran’s Defence Council, and the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Mohammad Pakpour.

Major regions in the Middle East have come under retaliatory fire by Iran including the UAE, Bahrain and Kuwait. Dubai and Abu Dhabi have been hit with Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah and the International Airport coming under strike.

Israel’s military has said it has struck more than 30 targets in western and central Iran, as per latest reports. Trump has said US attacks would continue for as long as necessary.

Iran has vowed revenge for Khamenei’s death. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has announced the start of “the most devastating offensive operation in the history of the Islamic Republic of Iran”.

The European Union will hold an emergency security meeting on Monday (March 2) over the conflict in the Middle East, said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
