Middle East Conflict - MHA Instructs States to Monitor Incidents That May Trigger Unrest in India

State authorities must now track "pro-Iran radical preachers" delivering sermons that stoke tensions - advisory

Udaipur, March 2, 2026 - The Indian government is taking proactive action in order to maintain peace and harmony in the country, in the wake of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East that began with the US-Israeli attack on Iran on February 28, 2026. The retaliatory action by Iran and the death of the country's Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has resulted in further aggression in the region.

The alert emanates from the Indian government’s fears of a possible ripple effect and communal tension in the country in the wake of this conflict. The Ministry of Home Affairs has instructed all States and authorities to be on an alert and take preventive action on incidents that could trigger unrest in India. As per media reports, instructions have been given to immediately address any speech or mention of the overseas events during any religious gathering or public meetings. Authorities have been given instructions to keep a watch on individuals or groups that could instigate unrest.

Precautionary measures are already in place in Jammu and Kashmir following spontaneous protests that erupted on Sunday (March 1) once the news of Khamenei’s death spread. Internet speed in the valley was reduced to regulate flow of information that could further aggravate the situation. Areas such as Lal Chowk, Saida Kadal, Budgam, Bandipora, Puwlama and Anantnag witnessed demonstrations.

Meanwhile, New Delhi has called for restraint among the warring factions while at the same time keeping a close watch on the developing situation, keeping in mind the large Indian diaspora across the Middle East region.
