Iran Shuts Hormuz Again After US Says It Will Continue Naval Blockade
Iran has reinforced restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz after US naval blockade statements, escalating tensions and raising fears of a global crude oil price surge
April 18, 2026 - Iran today, April 18, reinforced restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz in protest against the continued US naval blockade of Iranian ports. The Islamic Republic announced this following US President Donald Trump’s statement on the US naval blockade saying that it “will remain in full force” until a permanent deal between the two countries is arrived at.
Tehran accused the US of violating the ceasefire and said that “control of the Strait of Hormuz has returned to its previous state ... under strict management and control of the armed forces.”
"Until the United States restores freedom of movement for all vessels visiting Iran, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz will remain strictly controlled," Iran's military command clarified.
Iran’s announcement of reimposing closure of the strategic chokepoint is likely to cause crude prices to shoot up again. Earlier, prices had eased after Iran confirmed that Hormuz was going to reopen following the US-brokered 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.
