Israel-Lebanon Ceasefire Begins; Trump Says Deal with Iran 'Close'
A 10-day Israel-Lebanon ceasefire begins after weeks of deadly conflict; US President Trump hints at US-Iran peace talks while Strait of Hormuz tensions continue
April 17, 2026 - A 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon (Hezbollah) has just come into effect following weeks of heavy fighting that caused thousands of deaths and mass displacement. After speaking to Lebanon President Joseph Aoun, US President Donald Trump on Thursday (April 16) announced that the ceasefire would be implemented at 5:00 pm Eastern Time.
The ceasefires puts a pause to six weeks of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, with battles raging in the south. The situation still continues to be very unstable with Israel saying it will be keeping its troops in southern Lebanon.
Trump is hoping that Hezbollah keeps its part of the ceasefire. Writing on Truth Social, the President said: "I hope Hezbollah acts nicely and well during this important period of time. It will be an GREAT moment for them if they do. No more killing. Must finally have PEACE! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP."
Meanwhile, serious diplomatic signals indicate that the US and Iran war may be nearing negotiations. Trump reiterated that they are “very close” to a deal that may end the war and that talks may restart in Islamabad by this weekend. He has also hinted that he may personally go to the Pakistani capital if a peace deal is signed between the two countries.
The broader conflict of the naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is still ongoing with the US actively enforcing it. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a post on X, “More than 10,000 American service members, 12 ships, and 100 aircraft have enforced the blockade in regional waters, ensuring that no vessels violate the President's proclamation."
European countries (France, UK, others) are launching efforts to reopen the route which was partially blocked by Iran when war erupted with US-Israel on February 28, 2026, and now by the US since April 13. France’s Defence Minister has said that European countries, including Belgium, the Netherlands and France, have mine-clearing capabilities that could help secure shipping routes through the waterway.
