After protesting continuously for 19 consecutive days and with no productive results, the members of the Udaipur Sarafa Association have augmented their protest by taking on a Hunger Strike from today at Ghanta Ghar. As reported earlier, the association is protesting against the custom hike on gold.
10 members of the association set on a hunger strike for a day; the strike started from 11am in the presence of politician Gulabchand Kataria
Kataria met all the jewelers and talked about the issue; the jewelers also requested him to convey their message to higher authorities including the Finance Minister.
The association announced that they will also observe a 2 hour silent protest from tomorrow, 7th April from 9 am to 11 am in front of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Gulab Bagh.
According to the sources the jewelers are also planning to undertake a mass demonstration at the Collector’s office tomorrow afternoon.
According to Inder Singh Mehta, the patron of Rajasthan Sarafa Union, the strike has been revoked till 11th May. The decision has been taken after the agreement between one of the three jewelers associations of India, including Rajasthan Sarafa Association. However, one of the associations is still on strike.
According to Mahaveer Singatwadia, the Udaipur association has been instructed by Subhash Gupta, who is coordinating with the Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and there are signs of a favorable outcome to the deliberations though nothing is clear as yet.
