The jewelers of Rajasthan have been on a prolonged strike to protest the newly implemented taxes on Gold in the Union Budget 2012 from the last 14 days, but on Saturday, 31st March post-midnight, a news was circulated about the strike being called off.
According to media reports, the strike was withdrawn when the Finance Minister, Pranab Mukherjee assured to take positive steps on demands of the Rajasthan State Jewelers Association.
Later, after midnight a meeting was conducted in which the call for Rajasthan Bandh was also taken back and the Udaipur Chamber of Commerce agreed to the decision.
Though most of jewelry shops were seen open today morning, but towards afternoon half of the shops pulled down their shutters, thereby confusing the media and the general public.
As per sources, the jewelers of Udaipur are divided into two associations, which were previously led by Mohan Makhija and Inder Singh Mehta and both have now stepped down from their posts.
As per the current situation, half of the shopkeepers rejected any such news having been floated last night about the Finance Minister’s positive approach and decided to continue the shut down for indefinite time, while the other shopkeepers opened their shops.
