Opposition to Transferring Affiliation of Mewar Medical Institutions: RNT Will be Among Those Affected
Accusations of promoting Jodhpur at the cost of Mewar
Udaipur, Mar 07, 2026: Protests against the transfer of medical institutions of Udaipur division to the Marwar University in Jodhpur has reached the floors of the Rajasthan Assembly.
Government run medical institutions and some private medical institutions in Udaipur division (that also encompasses the Mewar region) have long been affiliated to the Rajasthan University of Health Sciences. The switching of their affiliation to the recently established Marwar University in Jodhpura are being met with strong opposition. This will affect government run medical, dental, nursing and pharmacy colleges as well privately operated unaffiliated medical institutes and physiotherapy institutes.
17 Affiliation Shifted
In 2024, the Rajasthan University of Health Sciences said that affiliation of 17 colleges has been transferred to Marwar Medical University, Jodhpur from RUHS from AY 2025-26 onwards. One of the major institutions affected by this transfer of affiliation is Rabindranath Tagore Medical College (RNT), Udaipur. This is the biggest medical hospital in the division and the entire Mewar region and is also ranked highly across India. Apart from this, many nursing colleges have also been transferred.
Controversy
The issue related to the transfer of affiliation has now been raised in the Rajasthan Assembly. Shrichand Kriplani, MLA called this decision impractical and devoid of any logic. Speaking to UdaipurTimes, Harish Rajani, President of the Udaipur Nursing Physiotherapy Association said that these institutions have been affiliated to the Rajasthan University of Health Sciences in Jaipur. He added that as per the Marwar Medical University Act 2023, institutes under the above scope will include only those operating in the Marwar region. However, the Congress government defined the scope to institutes operating in Jodhpur, Bikaner as well as Udaipur (Mewar) divisions. Two years ago, after the elections, this matter was put on hold. However, now that the matter has again come up for inspection, pressure is now being created to remove these institutions from RUHS and link them to Marwar University.
Directors of local medical colleges, students, as well as MPs and MLAs from the Mewar region have strongly opposed the proposal. They argue that when institutions are functioning smoothly under RUHS and students face no difficulty traveling to Jaipur, the proposed decision appears illogical. Rajani added that students from institutions are functioning smoothly under RUHS and students from Udaipur, Dungarpur, Banswara, Pratapgarh, Chittorgarh and Bhilwara face no difficulty traveling to Jaipur, the proposed decision appears irrelevant. Apart from this, the amount of paperwork this will lead to, will be unproductive.
Political Support
Dr. Mannalal Rawat (Udaipur MP), Chunnilal Garasia (Rajya Sabha MP), Tarachand Jain (Udaipur City MLA), Phoolsingh Meena (Udaipur Rural MLA) and Deepti Kiran Maheshwari (Rajsamand MLA) along with other Mewar legislators have also opposed the move and demanded reconsideration from the government. In a letter to the government, they stated that the decision has created unrest among faculty members, administrative bodies and students.
Raising the issue in the Assembly, Shrichand Kriplani said affiliating these institutions with Marwar University is not practical and suggested that medical colleges should be established in every division on the lines of RUHS. He urged the government to reconsider the decision.
