PM Modi becomes India’s longest-serving Prime Minister, surpassing Nehru’s record
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become India's longest-serving elected Prime Minister, overtaking Jawaharlal Nehru's record. US Ambassador Sergio Gor congratulated him, while the NDA prepares a special celebration in New Delhi.
June 10, 2026: US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Wednesday congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on becoming India's longest-serving elected Prime Minister. Calling the achievement a "powerful testament" to Modi's decades of public service and leadership, Gor extended his best wishes to the Prime Minister.
"Congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on becoming India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister. This achievement is a powerful testament to his decades of dedicated public service and leadership. Wishing him all the best," Gor said.
Prime Minister Modi achieved the landmark on Wednesday after completing 4,399 days in office as an elected Prime Minister. With this, he surpassed the record of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, whose tenure as an elected Prime Minister began after India's first general elections in 1952.
Modi Becomes India's Longest-Serving Elected Prime Minister
While Nehru led the country from 1952 onwards, his earlier tenure between 1947 and 1952 was as head of the interim government before India conducted its first general elections. For this reason, only his elected tenure is considered in the comparison.
Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi spent more than 14 years in office, but her terms were not continuous. In contrast, Modi has served uninterruptedly since first taking office in 2014. He subsequently secured decisive mandates in 2019 and 2024, becoming the first Prime Minister since Nehru to win three consecutive Lok Sabha elections.

The Modi government’s tenure has also been marked by several major infrastructure and nation-building projects. These include the new Parliament building, the Central Vista redevelopment project, Kartavya Path, Vande Bharat trains, the Statue of Unity, INS Vikrant, the Kashmir rail link, Noida International Airport, the Namo Bharat RRTS, and the Ganga Expressway.
NDA Meeting to Mark the Achievement
To commemorate the milestone and celebrate 12 years of the NDA government at the Centre, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is scheduled to hold a key meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday.
The gathering at Bharat Mandapam is expected to be attended by Prime Minister Modi, senior BJP leaders, Chief Ministers and Deputy Chief Ministers from all 22 NDA-ruled states and Union Territories, along with leaders from the alliance's constituent parties.
According to sources, the NDA is likely to pass a resolution congratulating Modi for surpassing the record previously held by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
Senior Union ministers, including Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, J.P. Nadda, and Shivraj Singh Chouhan, are also expected to attend the event.
The meeting will focus on the NDA government's achievements over the past 12 years, future policy priorities, and the alliance's political roadmap. Discussions are likely to cover governance reforms, development initiatives, and preparations for upcoming electoral challenges.
