PM Modi Meets Putin, Calls for End to ‘Endless War’
The two leaders agreed to further strengthen the India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership, according to the MEA
Sept 1, 2026 - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on Monday, August 31. This was their first meeting this year. The two leaders had earlier met in Delhi for the 23rd Annual Summit in December 2025.
The leaders discussed the Russia-Ukraine conflict, particularly the ongoing fighting in the Black Sea region, maritime trade and the safety of Indian sailors. PM Modi called on Putin to move from “endless war to the end of war” saying that every day spent in war pushes humanity backward. He stressed that the focus should shift toward bringing the conflict to an end. “As you know, India supports all efforts towards peace and will continue to do so," the Prime Minister said.
The Ministry of External Affairs said the two leaders agreed to further strengthen the India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. They also reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation in areas including politics, the economy, defence, energy and space.
