Rajasthan HC Pulls Up Govt Over Unsafe Schools, Says Display 'Risk' Notice
Rajasthan High Court criticises low budget for dilapidated school buildings, warns government and calls situation unsafe for students
Feb 17, 2026 - The Rajasthan High Court has come down heavily on the government over the poor condition of school buildings and the inadequate budget allocated for repairs. The Court was hearing the matter related to a suo motu public interest litigation on unsafe school buildings.
During the hearing, the Court remarked that if the government cannot provide safe school infrastructure, it should put up boards outside schools stating that children are coming to school at their own risk and have no right to education.
The Bench of Justice Mahendra Kumar Goyal and Justice Ashok Kumar Jain commented on the insufficient budget for repairs saying that around Rs 20,000 crore is required but the government has not allocated even Rs 2,000 crore in the budget. Instead of taking concrete action, the administration is merely submitting documents related to the case, the judges said.
The State told the Court that Rs 550 crore had been allocated for school repairs which the Bench described as very paltry and suggested monitoring of the expenditure. When the Advocate General said the Court could not do that, the Bench responded that the government should bring a proposal and allow the Court to decide. Advocates Alok Garg and Sunil Samdariya were appointed as amici curiae.
The Court adjourned the hearing till March 5, warning the government that this would be its last chance.
