Trump Says Ceasefire Extension Unlikely, Warns of 'Lots of Bombs' if No Deal
Islamabad talks still uncertain; Iran says it will not negotiate under the 'shadow of threats'; warns of 'new cards on the battlefield'
April 21, 2026 - The stalemate with regard to the peace talks between the United States and Iran continues as US refuses to lift the naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. Currently, the fighting has been paused because of the two-week ceasefire which, however, is due to expire on Wednesday (April 22). With the deadline for the ceasefire to end fast approaching, the entire region is on the edge with resumption of war looming large on the horizon if no deal is arrived at before that.
On Monday, US President Donald Trump told Bloomberg News that the the ceasefire will be over “Wednesday evening Washington time” adding that extending it was “highly unlikely” and that “then lots of bombs will start going off” if no deal.
Though the door to diplomacy is still open, however, there is no official confirmation from Iran whether it will take part in the talks in Islamabad. Reports say US Vice-President JD Vance is to travel to Pakistan on Tuesday (April 20) even though US President Donald Trump has said he is under no pressure to make a deal.
While Trump is insisting on talks for the conflict to end, the Islamic Republic has made it clear that it will not talk under the “shadow of threats”. Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has stressed that negotiations would not be possible on US terms. He further warned of “new cards on the battlefield” if the US resumes attacks.
Meanwhile, talks between Israel and Lebanon will take place on Thursday (April 23), which may discuss the extension of the ongoing 10-day ceasefire.
