Gambhir Backs BCCI Family Rule, Opposes Kohli’s Stand
New rule limits family stay to 14 days on long tours; Gambhir says it is about commitment, Kohli calls it isolating
July 11, 2025 - Indian coach Gautam Gambhir has supported the BCCI’s new family rule. He said that the main duty of the players is to play cricket and make the country proud.
After India’s 1-3 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, BCCI introduced new guidelines for the players. As per the new rule, the time spent by families with players has been limited. According to this, during tournaments lasting 45 days or more, families can stay with the players for only 14 days. For short tours, the family stay is limited to a maximum of seven days.
Kohli Against
Virat Kohli has spoken out against this new BCCI rule saying he does not like it. Kohli said that he doesn’t want to go back to his room and sit alone and sad without his family.
Gambhir Supports
During a special chat with Cheteshwar Pujara in the third Test match, Gambhir said that players should remember they are not on a vacation. They are on a tour to represent the country.
Gambhir added that he has no problem with players being with family, but the main focus must be on cricket. Players should be fully dedicated to their goal.
Gambhir said, "Families are important, but you have to understand one thing — you are here for a purpose. This is not a holiday. Very few people get the chance to wear this jersey and make the country proud. So yes, I am not against being with family, but cricket must come first."
