Dr. Khamesra, a resident of Govardhan Vilas completed her MD in 1989 and holds a degree in Electroneuromyography (ENMG). She is now a neurologist at the M.B. Hospital.
This small story of a great woman embosses the many unsung heroes of our society who have overcome their problems and now control their problems. Sharing this story on the National Cancer Survival Day, celebrated every year on the first Sunday of June, we want to portray how Dr. Khamesra’s 16 years of fight against cancer has carved her into a person of experience and knowledge.
When her treatment in Udaipur in 1994 and the chemotherapy sessions were not helping, her father took her to Mumbai for further medical assistance where it was discovered that there was another tumor shaped cancer in her ovary, and to save her life, the tumor along with both her ovaries were removed from her body.
She was then commuting from Mumbai to Udaipur every 15 days for her medical examination and treatment, which proved to improve her condition.
In 2002, after 8 years of the initial pain Dr. Khamesra suffered, she felt the same kind of immense distress in her body and was rushed to Mumbai for urgent consultation. After a series of operations and chemotherapies, the doctor’s discovered that the constant medical therapies had destroyed her body’s sensory veins. This led to a major weakness in her body and a total hair loss.
This was the most sorrowful period of her life, but the strong willed lady overcame it and showed her zest for life.
Dr. Renu Khamesra after completing 48 years of her life, by the great motivation and influence of Dr. Abbas Safiee, in 2008 branched out to Bangalore for studying ENMG for three years to gain more knowledge and serve the society.
She also shared that since her sensory veins had been damaged due to the constant chemotherapies, she cannot see very clearly in the evening and usually never drives. She sleeps with her bedroom’s lights turned on.
The amazing persona that Dr. Renu Khamesra caries is an inspiration to many who feel defeated in life. Her story can teach us many basic ways of living, but the most important part is never giving up.
Hats Off Dr. Renu Khamesra!
