June 12, 2025 - Former Indian team head coach Ravi Shastri believes that Virat Kohli’s Test retirement could have been handled better. He said that Kohli deserved a proper farewell. Shastri also added that Kohli should have been made captain again after the Australia series last year.

For reference, Kohli retired from Test cricket on May 12, 2025. He announced his retirement through a social media post. Kohli, also known as "King Kohli," scored 9,230 runs in 123 Test matches, including 30 centuries. His sudden retirement shocked the cricket world.

What Shastri Said

Sony Liv shared a clip of Shastri on social media, where the former head coach said,

“When you leave, people realise what a great player you were. I am sad about the way he left. I think it could have been handled better. There should have been more communication.”

Have Been Made Captain Again

Shastri also said that he would have made Kohli the captain again after India’s 1-3 defeat in the Test series against Australia. Readers may recall that the pair of Shastri and Kohli gave India a historic Test series win in Australia.

Shastri said, “If I had anything to do with this, I would have made Kohli the captain directly after the Australia series this year.”

After the retirement of both Kohli and Rohit Sharma from Test cricket, Shubman Gill has been named the new captain. The Indian team is set to play a Test series against England starting on June 20.
