SC Aravalli Classification Decision: Protests Erupt in Udaipur

Several Congress leaders and workers participated in the protests, raising slogans against the government and the court's ruling

Udaipur, Dec 19, 2025: Widespread protests have erupted in Udaipur against the recent Supreme Court judgment concerning the Aravalli mountain range.

Protesters have called the classification of the Aravalli range as Only landforms that rise 100 metres or more above the local relief will now be legally classified as "Aravalli Hills". A cluster of two or more such hills within 500 meters of each other will form an "Aravalli Range" misleading and incorrect, asserting that the range is crucial for environmental protection, water resources, and biodiversity.

They warned that continued encroachment on the Aravalli's existence would have serious consequences for future generations. They demanded that the government formulate a clear and concrete policy for the protection of the Aravalli range.

The Congress party, along with local social and environmental groups, took to the streets demanding to "Save the Aravallis." The protesters warned that they would intensify their movement if the Supreme Court does not reconsider its decision. Several Congress leaders and workers participated in the protests, raising slogans against the government and the court's ruling.

Implications

This height-based criterion means an estimated 90% of the Aravalli range could lose its protected status, as many ecologically crucial lower hills, ridges, and foothills fall below this threshold.

Mining Regulations:

The Court has instituted an immediate prohibition on issuing any new mining leases or renewals in the four states until an all-encompassing Management Plan for Sustainable Mining (MPSM) is established by specialized organizations.

Current legal mining activities are allowed to proceed but must comply with revised environmental and sustainability guidelines.

Future Planning Directive: The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) has been tasked with creating the MPSM by employing geo-referenced ecological assessments to pinpoint essential conservation zones, acceptable mining areas, and measures for restoration.
