March 12, 2026 - Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla returned to the Speaker’s chair on Thursday (March 12) after the Opposition's no-confidence motion against him was defeated in the House by a voice vote amid heavy uproar in the House on Wednesday (March 11) after a 12-hour debate.

Birla rejected the charge against him by the Opposition of being partisan and said that he has always maintained impartiality, discipline and balance and tried to ensure that every Member of Parliament (MP) is allowed to speak in the House.

"Some members were of the opinion that the Leader of the Opposition stands above the House and can speak on any subject. However, no one has any special privilege of that kind. The House functions according to its rules," the Speaker said making an indirect reference to Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi.

On Wednesday, BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad had initiated the no-confidence motion debate, saying the office of the Speaker and no-trust motions should not be used as political tools. He claimed the motion had been brought merely to satisfy the ego of an individual.

Gandhi urged for a serious discussion in the House about democratic procedures and the role of the Speaker. He said his name had been repeatedly mentioned and strange remarks made about him, but whenever he tried to stand up to respond or present his side, he was not allowed to speak.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah challenged the Opposition saying they were free to bring a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Narendra Modi but targeting the Speaker was inappropriate because he does not belong to any single political party.

There was strong protests in the House seeking apology from the Home Minister after he commented on Gandhi, saying, “Sometimes you wink at someone, sometimes you blow a flying kiss, and sometimes you go and cling to the Prime Minister.” Later, Shah said that if any of his remarks were considered unparliamentary, they should be expunged from the record.
