Film revisits Ganguly's legendary cricket journey and iconic Lord's moment
One of the biggest highlights of the biopic will undoubtedly be the recreation of India's historic NatWest Trophy final victory at Lord's in 2002. In the summit clash against England, India faced a daunting target of 326 runs. After losing five wickets for just 146 runs, the match appeared to be slipping away before Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif produced one of the greatest partnerships in Indian ODI history to guide the team to a memorable victory.
As soon as India sealed the win, Ganguly removed his jersey and waved it from the Lord's balcony in celebration. The gesture was widely seen as a response to Andrew Flintoff, who had celebrated shirtless after England's series victory over India earlier that year in Mumbai. Ganguly's celebration became one of the defining images of Indian cricket and symbolised a new era of fearless and aggressive cricket under his captaincy. More than two decades later, the moment continues to be remembered as one of the sport's most iconic celebrations.
The biopic is directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and produced by Luv Ranjan. The screenplay traces Ganguly's inspiring journey from a talented youngster in Kolkata to becoming one of India's most successful and influential captains. Apart from Rajkummar Rao in the lead role, the film also features Saswata Chatterjee as Ganguly's father Chandidas Ganguly, Aparajita Adhya as his mother Nirupa Ganguly, and Tanya Maniktala as his wife Dona Ganguly.

The film's shooting began several weeks ago and is currently underway at multiple locations, including Eden Gardens in Kolkata and other parts of the city closely associated with Ganguly's life and cricketing journey. The makers are aiming to recreate several landmark moments from his career, offering audiences a closer look at the highs and challenges that shaped one of Indian cricket's greatest captains.
Sports biopics have consistently found success at the Indian box office in recent years. Films such as MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, based on former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, inspired by the life of legendary sprinter Milkha Singh, received widespread appreciation from both critics and audiences. With Rajkummar Rao stepping into the shoes of Sourav Ganguly and Vikramaditya Motwane leading the project, expectations are naturally high.
As the first look continues to create excitement across social media, fans will now be eagerly waiting to see how DADA: The Sourav Ganguly Story captures the remarkable career, leadership, and legacy of one of Indian cricket's most celebrated captains when it arrives in theatres on May 14, 2027.
