Kolkata, Sept 17, 2025: Indian Grandmaster Vaishali Rameshbabu has made history. She won the final of the FIDE Women’s Grand Swiss 2025 and took the title. With this win, Vaishali has achieved a new record. She has now won the FIDE Women’s Grand Swiss title for the second time in a row.

The chess player from Chennai also qualified for the Women’s Candidates Tournament after winning the title in a tiebreaker on Monday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Vaishali on her success in the Grand Swiss and gave her best wishes for the future. He wrote on Twitter, “A great achievement. Congratulations to Vaishali Rameshbabu. Her hard work and love for chess are inspiring. Best wishes for the future.”

Vaishali Shines in the Title Match

Indian Grandmaster Vaishali Rameshbabu played a draw with former world champion Tan Zhongyi in the 11th and final round of the Women’s Grand Swiss on Monday. With this result, she reached the same score of eight points as Russian player Kateryna Lagno. After that, 24-year-old Vaishali defeated Lagno in the tiebreaker to keep her title. She also became the third Indian player to qualify for the Women’s Candidates Tournament next year. Divya Deshmukh and Koneru Humpy have already qualified.

Comeback After Struggles

Vaishali’s recent form was not good. She scored only 1.5 points in the Chennai Grandmasters Challengers and also lost in the quarterfinals of the Women’s World Cup to Tan Zhongyi. After seven losses in a row, she even thought of leaving the Grand Swiss, but her brother Praggnanandhaa and her family gave her courage.

On Sunday, Vaishali beat former world champion Maria Muzychuk of Ukraine to stay at the top. Then on Monday, she drew with Tan Zhongyi while playing with black pieces. Later, she won the tiebreaker and became the first player in any category to keep the Grand Swiss title. Earlier, she won this title in 2023 with six wins in the UK.
