April 28, 2026 - According to the latest report by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), India is among the top five military spending countries. SIPRI’s data shows India’s military spending of $92.1 billion (Rs 8.6 lakh crore) in 2025 which marks an increase of 8.9% from the previous year.

The top five on SIPRI list are:

  1. United States - $954 billion
  2. China - $336 billion
  3. Russia - $190 billion
  4. Germany - $114 billion
  5. India - $92.1 billion

Together, the top three of US, China, Russia spent $1,480 billion, or 51% of the global total.

SIPRI, which tracks defence spending every year, shows that global military spending in 2025 reached a new record amid rising geopolitical instability and wars across the world. Total global military expenditure in 2025 went up by 2.9% from the previous year to $2,887 billion (approximately Rs 273 lakh crore), marking the 11th consecutive year of increase in defence budgets. It equals 2.5% of global GDP - the highest share since 2009.

According to the report, global per capita military expenditure has now reached $352 (approximately Rs 29,000). SIPRI believes that this upward trend will continue in 2026 and beyond, as the world is increasingly seeking security through weapons rather than diplomacy.

According to the report, India’s defence budget is mainly focused on two fronts: the ongoing standoff with China along the Line of Actual Control and modernisation.

At the same time, Pakistan’s defence spending has also increased by 11% to $11.9 billion, largely driven by arms procurement from China. It ranked 31st among the 40 countries tracked by SIPRI.

Meanwhile, China’s military spending continues to go up for the 31st straight year. NATO countries such as Belgium, Spain, Norway, Denmark, Poland and Canada saw sharp spikes. Germany's 24% rise pushed it to fourth place globally.

According to the SIPRI report, the year 2025 saw rearmament across the world. The Russia-Ukraine war saw Europe rearming while countries like Japan, Australia and Ukraine are also spending on defence. In fact, 40% of Ukraine’s GDP is spent on its military, which is the highest in the world.
