Udaipur, Oct 11, 2025: Udaipur, once of the country's highly preferred tourist destinations and a premium destination wedding location, is currently experiencing a tourism crisis as tourist buses are being halted daily by traffic police at various entry points.
In response, the Udaipur Tourist Bus Society has announced a complete strike on October 14th and 15th, impacting all tourist transport services. Society president Madanlal Menaria highlighted that tourists are facing substantial inconvenience due to the prohibition on buses accessing hotels, the airport, and tourist sites, forcing them to utilize auto rickshaws and taxis instead.
Despite multiple appeals to local authorities, no resolution has been reached, prompting this collective action. The strike coincides with a national tourism event in Udaipur on the same dates and will likely exacerbate the situation and reflect poorly on the administration’s handling of the crisis.
"We have invested crores of rupees in luxury buses because Udaipur's future depends on tourism. But this attitude of the police administration is discouraging the entire industry. We also held detailed discussions with Additional Superintendent of Police Umesh Ojha and Traffic Deputy Ashok Anjana, but still no headway has been made" - Society Treasurer, Panil Pokharna.
Society officials emphasize that this strike is a necessary response to ongoing dissatisfaction within the tourism industry, underscoring the importance of dialogue with the administration. Additionally, all external tourist vehicle traffic will be included in the strike. Tourist buses, taxis, urbania, tempo travellers will not ply on the said dates. Accordingly no pick up and drop off at airport and no visits to tourist places will be facilitated by these tourist vehicles.
The Background that led to this situation
Tour operators and bus owners are particularly concerned about traffic police halting tourist buses outside the city, causing significant inconvenience for families and senior citizens who are compelled to find alternative transport to key attractions. This disruption is driving group tours and corporate events to other locations, threatening Udaipur's tourism sector. In response, the Udaipur Tourist Bus Service Society has reached out to tourism officials to advocate for better access from transport hubs to hotels, urging the establishment of clear guidelines and dedicated routes for tourist buses to enhance visitor convenience and overall experience.
The government seeks to position the city as a leading tourist destination, yet challenges remain. Recent discussions with the Deputy Chief Minister focused on improving night tourism, but ongoing issues hamper visitor experiences.
