Searching for, viewing, creating, downloading or sharing sexual abuse material involving children is a serious and punishable offence
UdaipurTimes, Oct 8, 2026 - The Rajasthan Police Cyber Crime Branch R4C has issued an important advisory for the general public regarding Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM). The police have made it clear that searching for, viewing, creating, downloading or sharing sexual abuse material involving children is a serious and punishable offence under the law. Action can be taken under the POCSO Act and the Information Technology Act for such activities.
The advisory was issued on the directions of Rajasthan Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar Sharma.
Additional Director General of Police, Cyber Crime, VK Singh said that CSAM is not ordinary adult content; rather, it refers to digital material involving the sexual abuse and exploitation of children below 18 years of age. A child’s consent is not legally valid in such cases. The dissemination of such material violates children’s rights, privacy and dignity.ADG VK Singh said that searching for, viewing or downloading CSAM increases demand for such illegal material and contributes to the exploitation of children. The police have appealed to people not to become part of such activities.
Digital records may remain: Police warn
According to the cyber police, digital records related to searching for or receiving such material through the internet or social media may come to light during an investigation. The police have warned that even after such material is deleted, digital or forensic evidence may still become part of an investigation.
Report immediately if you accidentally encounter such material
The police said that if a person accidentally comes across CSAM on the internet or social media, they should immediately report it rather than sharing or forwarding it further. Citizens can file a complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
While making a report, details such as the relevant URL, username and time may be helpful in the investigation. The police have also urged people to educate children about safe touch and unsafe touch and to teach them not to share photographs or personal information with strangers online.
Dos and Don’ts
The cyber police advised that if CSAM-related material is encountered, it should not be forwarded to any individual or group. People should also avoid taking screenshots, downloading the material or saving it on a phone, computer or cloud storage in the name of collecting evidence.
The police said that instead of arguing with the person involved or taking the law into one’s own hands, the matter should immediately be reported to the police and relevant cyber agencies.
According to the police, one timely and appropriate report can help protect a child from abuse.
