US Extends Waiver for Already Loaded Russian Oil; New Deadline May 16
The US grants a one-month waiver allowing limited Russian oil trade for shipments already loaded and at sea; India among countries likely to benefit
April 18, 2026 - In a new announcement, the United States has now decided to again allow countries to buy Russian oil and petroleum products but only which have already been loaded on tankers as of Friday (April 16). This temporary waiver will last a month - that is allowed only until 12:01 am (0401 GMT) May 16, 2026.
The US Treasury Department posted the license to its website late on Friday (April 17). Earlier, the US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had on April 15 said the one-month sanction waiver on countries to buy Russian and Iranian oil would not be renewed. While the Russian oil waiver expired on April 11, the one on Iranian oil was to end on April 19.
India is likely to benefit from this second temporary waiver because it is a key importer of Russian oil which comes at a discounted price. During the first waiver period, India had placed orders for around 30 million barrels of Russian oil.
